If you hire a non-executive director to join you then you have to make a commitment to work with that person for a period of time and they in fact join your board of directors and have all the responsibilities of a director of your company. It then means that they have to spend time (and therefore your money) on corporate governance and all that entails. It also means a regular payment whether you use the service or not.
Business coaching is different from management consultants in that no reports are written, instead an action oriented approach is used whereby each session is dedicated to identifying key burning issues, using various techniques to identify solutions and then agreement on the next actions that the business needs to do in order to move towards its objectives. With business coaching you are not paying for somebody to come in to your business and for you to pay them to tell you what you already know. Business coaching is all about working with you on the problems and identifying things that you can do to fix them. Business coaching is about helping you work on your business. Business coaching is about bringing knowledge, experience, networks and another set of eyes on your problem in a positive and non-judgemental way. Clearly regular coaching sessions are better but they can also be just for those times when you need an outside pair of eyes on a challenging opportunity.
